essay gatsby

The great gatsby is a great novel made by F.Scott Fitzgerald with a lot more to it than what meets the eye in this essay my three main points are about the green light, eyes of TJ Eckleburg and the water/rain these three things i will be talking about come under symbolism and illusion. in each paragraph i will say why these things i have chosen show there relevance in this illusion made by gatsby and what it could symbolise.

this green light expresses gatsby’s love for daisy and his strong dream of having her as his wife.In the book the light is always visible from gatsby house no matter if its raining or if the sun is shining so bright it’s always there to remind gatsby that he can still win daisy over and have her all to himself even after all these years. This light I feel like is what gives gatsby a lot of his motivation which leads him to create an illusion so daisy can enter his trap his life of living the “american dream”. doesn’t everyone want that dream? “And as the moon rose higher the inessential houses began to melt away until gradually I became aware of the old island here that flowered once for Dutch sailors’ eyes—a fresh, green breast of the new world…. And as I sat there, brooding on the old, unknown world, I thought of Gatsby’s wonder when he first picked out Daisy’s light at the end of his dock. He had come such a long way to this blue lawn, and his dream must have seemed so close he could hardly fail to grasp it. But what he did not know was that it was already behind him, somewhere in the vast obscurity beyond the city, where the dark fields of the republic rolled on under the night. ” this quote explains when Gatsby first finds the light he now knows his dream with this light and it feels so close to him that he won’t let himself fail to grab it, it’s really just giving Gatsby a bad and very strong sort of motivation and encouragement to keep his illusion going and to never give up.the green light to Gatsby could be like are idle or inspiration, these people or things drive and motivate are hopes and dreams, of what we want to become or want we want to keep away from we are all like Gatsby we all have something that keeps us going maybe just not like that.

The people in the valley think of those eyes T.J. eckleburgs eyes as the eyes of god they look over everything and he sees everything but you would think that if these eyes were special, the people in the valley would have a little better luck instead of being stuck in the cycle of poverty.maybe these eyes give them something else maybe something more important than luck. HOPE the one thing that keep us going and looking up at are dream, without these eyes the people wouldn’t have anything to believe in, feel comforted or looked over by these eyes are very important and special to the people.”The eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg are blue and gigantic – their irises are one yard high. They look out of no face, but, instead, from a pair of enormous yellow spectacles which pass over a nonexistent nose. Evidently some wild wag of an oculist set them there to fatten his practice in the borough of Queens, and then sank down himself into eternal blindness, or forgot them and moved away. But his eyes, dimmed a little by many paintless days, under sun and rain, brood on over the solemn dumping ground.” this quote explains what the eyes look like and there just simply eyes surrounded by yellow glasses. but this quote also says how the eyes are faded and weathered this could represent the valley itself run down and worn out, just needing a-little help to get back to the way it was or even turn out better. just like the people a-little help can take them along way to get back on there feet. these eyes really represent the valley and the people within it.

The water/rain is weird because I thought at the start it was there because of sadness and like bad emotions but it’s also been there when Gatsby and daisy were the closest they have ever been. The rain is kinda i guess it’s just there when there’s any kind of strong emotion around, because its been shown to be rain around when Gatsby and daisy first got back together from all the tension and unsureness of there relationship but after they calmed down and chilled out the rain left, also the fact that Gatsby died in his pool is not showing any-good emotions whatsoever so who knows I guess the rain is mostly bad or scary emotions but it has been there when the vibe was good.“So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.” i feel like this quote describes Gatsby’s and Daisy’s relationship them being in boats trying to get with each other but the current/ tom is whats keeping them apart trying to back to the past.these ideas of rain can be seen in the real world but definitely not as cliché as the book and the rain definitely isn’t set on one group of emotions personal.

so in conclusion the great gatsby is a great novel with a lot of twists and turns.
